Here’s what you need to know before buying a bed.
Bed Sizes
Primarily, the size of your bed is determined by two things: the size of the mattress and the type of bed. A queen bed, for example, must be at least large enough to accommodate a queen-sized mattress (60 inches wide by 80 inches long). From there, it might be wider or longer based on the type of bed you choose. Sleigh beds, for example, have an outward curve on the headboard and footboard and tend to be wide and stately, making them larger than some other bed types.
What is the Size of a Twin Bed Frame?
While twin bed frames can range in size, a twin bed frame must be at least large enough to accommodate a twin-sized mattress. Traditional twin-sized mattresses are 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. Some twin bed frames are designed to accommodate twin XL mattresses, which are longer than traditional twin mattresses, measuring in at 39 inches wide by 80 inches long.
What is the Size of a Full-Sized Bed Frame?
A full bed is between a twin bed and a queen bed in size. Full bed frames must be large enough to accommodate a full mattress, which measures in at 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. Depending on the style of the bed, it may extend out past these measurements, taking up more space in your room.
What is the Size of a Queen Bed Frame?
Like twin beds, queen bed frames also vary in size, though they must be at least large enough to accommodate a queen-sized mattress, which measure in at 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. Different style beds may be longer or wider, based on their style. A mid-century modern platform bed, for example, will likely be on the smaller end, while a traditional sleigh bed will likely be on the larger end.
What is the Size of a King Bed Frame?
Like all beds, king-sized beds can range in size based on the style of the bed. In general, they must be large enough to accommodate a traditional king bed, which measures in at 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. Some king bed frames are large enough to accommodate a California King bed, which measures in at 72 inches wide by 84 inches long.
Types of Beds
The good news is that there are plenty of different bed types to choose from, so you’ll have options when designing your bedroom. Different types of beds work better for different interior design styles, room shapes, and square footage, so it’s important to consider what you’re looking for before deciding on a bed.
What is a Panel Bed?

Panel beds are perhaps the most common type of bed available today. They tend to have a footboard and a decorated panel headboard. While panel beds often look similar to platform beds, panel beds contain side rails, which hold the box spring and mattress in place. Because they have side rails, your mattress will need a box spring if you’re using a panel bed.
What is a Sleigh Bed?

Sleigh beds feature a curved headboard and footboard, mimicking the shape of a horse sleigh. Sleigh beds tend to be more traditional in style, with rich wood tones, ornate detailing, and curved edges. While a sleigh bed can range in size, because of their stately size and elegance, the majority of sleigh beds are designed for queen- and king-sized beds. They tend to work best as a focal point in larger bedrooms.
What is a Poster Bed?

As indicated by their name, poster beds have posters that extend from each of the four corners of the bed. These posters can range from more modern, sleek lines as pictured above to more ornate detailing that mimics the traditional furniture style. While these beds tend to look elegant and stylish, they do have some drawbacks. The posters can collect dust, making them harder to maintain, and they’re often heavy and difficult to take apart, making them best for people who are less prone to frequent moves.
What is a Canopy Bed?

When you think of canopy beds, you probably imagine draped fabrics around four posts. Like poster beds, canopy beds have four posters at each of the corners of the bed, but unlike poster beds, the posters on a canopy bed are attached to cross beams to make it appear connected. If you have a lot of natural light in your bedroom, the draped fabric on your canopy bed can help keep out sunlight and help you sleep longer. They tend to work best in rooms with high ceilings, as a canopy bed paired with a low ceiling can make your bedroom feel small and cramped.
What is an Upholstered Bed?

Upholstered beds are beds that incorporate materials like velvet, leather, suede, or other fabrics over the headboard, base, and/or footboard. Typically, the material is overlaid on top of additional padding, making the bed visually and texturally interesting. Upholstered beds are one of the hottest interior design trends of 2019, and in addition to the stylish appeal, the soft textures do a great job of creating a relaxing, calm, and peaceful bedroom atmosphere.
What is a Storage Bed?

Like its name implies, a storage bed is a bed that contains storage drawers at the footboard or along the sides of the bed. While the amount of storage varies, storage beds more efficiently utilize the available space in the room, making them a great option for people who are furnishing a small bedroom. Storage beds range in size from twin to king, but can be especially helpful for furnishing kids’ bedrooms, as they can prevent the room from becoming too cluttered with toys, shoes, books, papers, and clothes.
What is a Platform Bed?

Like a panel bed, a platform bed tends to have a decorative headboard and footboard. While panel beds also have side rails for box springs and mattresses, platform beds generally have a lower profile, with rows of closely positioned slats, which serve as a platform for mattresses so that they don’t necessarily need a box spring. While memory foam mattresses, in particular, work great with platform beds, you can generally use any type of mattress with a platform bed, as the slats serve the same purpose of a traditional box spring. Platforms can be harder on innerspring mattresses, though, so be sure you do your research before deciding.
What is a Trundle Bed?

A trundle bed is a bed with a storage drawer holding another mattress that can be pulled out as a place for an additional person to sleep. Trundle beds are great for children’s room, as they easily and covertly store an additional bed that can be pulled out when a friend sleeps over. There are also trundle beds designed with storage drawers in place of the additional mattress to help with additional bedroom storage.
What is a Bunk Bed?

A bunk bed is a bed that has two or more beds stacked one on top of the other. Most bunk beds have an attached ladder, so your child can easily get up and down from the top bunk of the bed. Bunk beds can be great space savers, since on the lower-most level, they only take up the space of one bed. In addition to saving space, kids often enjoy the thrill of bunk beds, though the downside is that it can be dangerous if a child falls from the top bunk. If you decide on a bunk bed, make sure to choose one with rails and other safety features to help protect your children. While bunk beds generally come in twin size, there are bunk beds available for larger mattresses. They even make bunk beds that only have a top bed, leaving the lower space for additional desk or storage space.
