Things to Know About Texas
From the iconic shape of the state itself to its history as a sovereign state, there’s no other place quite like Texas. As the second-largest state in area after Alaska, everything really is bigger here. More than 29.1 million residents called Texas home in 2020—and we’re happy to welcome more. Here are a few facts to know about the Lone Star State as a new Texan.
Weather:
The weather in Texas really depends on where you are. Texas has a wide range of temperatures across the state. While some regions see cold temps and snow in the winter, it’s relatively mild compared to traditionally colder states. In the summers, you can expect dry heat as you head west or toward the panhandle, and humid, balmy summers toward the Gulf Coast. No matter where you are, most of Texas will see upper 90s in the peak of summer.
Texas has wide variations in precipitation patterns, and of course, we can’t talk about weather without talking hurricanes. If you’re anywhere near the Gulf Coast, “Hurricane Season” is a term you’ll get to know fast. June 1 – November 30 is the official hurricane season here.
Home value:
According to Zillow.com, the average value of middle-tier homes in Texas is $262,820 (and growing!) Even with steadily growing prices year over year, many consider the range of styles, locations, and prices of homes in Texas to be a bargain.
Taxes:
Unlike most other states, Texas doesn’t require a personal income tax—though you can expect payroll tax deductions to be made automatically from your paychecks. Texas has a 6.25 percent state sales tax, but many jurisdictions add an additional 2 percent sales tax for a total of 8.25 percent.

Moving to Houston: Things to Know
Welcome to the Bayou City! Houston is 665 square miles and the fourth most populous city in the nation, with 2.31 million inhabitants as of 2019. And that whole “bayou” thing? We have ten main waterways winding throughout the city and surrounding areas.
Houston is the most ethnically diverse metro area in the United States, with at least 145 languages being spoken, 90 nations with consular representation—and tons of cuisines from around the globe.
The Houston-Woodlands-Sugar Land area is made up of nine counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller.

How do you beat the summer heat? Mostly by staying inside. And there’s no place more refreshing than your favorite Houston restaurant. If you have an eye for design and fashion, you’re right at home in Houston. Nightlife
Ready to go barhopping? Downtown might be the place for you. Catch a ride-sharing service or hop on the METRORail and roll up to Main Street—home to iconic bars and restaurants. Or visit Washington Avenue, where you can walk to bars and eateries or get a workout as you and friends take to the street on a moving pedal bar!

Moving to Austin: Things to Know
Welcome to the capital! Austin, Texas—known for the University of Texas campus, outdoor destinations and live music—is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. And for good reason. There are few things more welcoming than Austin’s mild climate and average 300 days of sunshine each year. (Perhaps that’s why so many movies have been filmed here.)
With an endless list of museums, restaurants, parks, and surrounding Hill Country delights, there’s really something for everyone in Austin. While there are tons of neighborhoods in and around Austin, the area is made up of three main counties: Travis, Hays and Willamson.

There’s something for every type of outdoor lover here. Hiking at the Ann and Roy Butler Trail, biking on the Violet Crown Trail and climbing in Reimers Ranch Park. Hill Country

Bienvenidos a San Antonio! (Welcome to San Antonio!) Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, San Antonio has grown to become the seventh most populous city in the United States with 1,434,625 residents in 2020. In addition, San Antonio’s 64% Hispanic population makes it the largest majority-Hispanic city in the U.S.

We can’t talk history without talking The Alamo. It’s the most visited attraction in all of Texas, but that’s not all San Antonio has to offer. Moving to Bryan: Things to Know
Gig ‘em! If you don’t know that term, you’ll get to know it soon enough. Bryan is the twin city of College Station, home to Texas A&M University. Together, these cities are referred to as the Bryan-College Station metro area with a population of more than 250,069. (Bryan itself has a population of 83,980 as of 2020.)
With the nearby A&M—the second-largest public university in the U.S.—Bryan-College Station is a leader in engineering, agriculture and biomedical innovation.
