A well-styled sofa promotes a cohesive and welcoming living room look. There are several elements of sofa design that can help guide you through the styling process. In this article, our Star expert Dean will walk through four sofa styling tips that anyone can do. Dean is an experienced interior designer who has recently shifted to the buying world. As our newest upholstery buyer, he is passionate about design and we are lucky to have his expertise at Star!

Dean agrees – a few thoughtful sofa styling decisions can go a long way. As a bonus, the tips below will not only help improve the look of your sofa, but also help to keep you comfortable and warm when lounging on it.

1. Be Intentional About Layout

Sofas and sectionals don’t have to be placed against walls — especially if your home has an open-concept living area. Dean recommends getting creative when planning your layout, and using your sofas to divide the room into zones. Your sofa can break up a large living space, add structure to an open-concept area, and make the room a more intentional space.

2. Pillows Add Pop

Pillows are perfect for adding color, personality and comfort to your sofa or sectional. As Dean suggests, select throw pillows with geometric patterns to create an updated look in your living room. Alternatively, go with solid colored pillows that complement the hues in a patterned area rug. Make sure the colors and patterns you choose coordinate with the room as a whole.

When deciding on placement for your pillows, position larger pillows towards the corners of your sofa or sectional. Then, embellish those pillows with smaller ones. When it comes to pillow arrangement, the idea is to create a full, balanced look. Use this guide to decide on the number of pillows to go with depending on sofa size:

  • Loveseat: 3 pillows
  • Standard sofa: 4 pillows
  • Large sofa: 5 pillows
  • Sectional sofa: 7+ pillows

3. Just Add Texture

Add texture and a splash of color to your sectional by draping a throw blanket over the back or over an arm. Pick a throw that’s soft and plush, keeping in mind that you’ll want to be able to use the blanket on chilly nights. Dean advises sticking to a solid-colored throw if your pillows are patterned to avoid clashing. When deciding on color, consider the effects of color on the mind. For example, the color orange is associated with feelings of warmth and kindness, while green suggests freshness and growth.

For a clean, traditional look, neatly fold your throw into a long, rectangular shape. Then, drape the throw over the back on your sofa for a simple, understated look. For a more organic look, pinch the throw at its center and pull it over the back of your sofa. This technique will give a more relaxed, undone look.

4. Make Seasonal Adjustments

Just because our sofas and sectionals don’t change with the four seasons doesn’t mean our accents can’t! Introduce festive pillows and throws that celebrate certain seasons and holidays. For a more thrifty option, find seasonal covers that fit over your everyday sofa pillows and can easily be changed with each holiday.
